POM-0001-v1: Personal Operating Manual (WIP)
Project ID: POM-0001-v1
Status: In Progress
Started: June 2026Objective
Design and build a personal operating manual - a small, hand-bound notebook that serves as a daily reference for the systems, habits, and principles I want to live by.
The goal wasn’t simply to make a notebook. It was to create something that felt intentional enough that I would actually want to carry it, use it, and revisit it every day.
The Idea
I’ve always appreciated good documentation. Whether it’s an engineering notebook, a field manual, or a technical reference, there’s something satisfying about having important information distilled into a physical object.
Rather than keeping reminders scattered across notes and apps, I wanted a single place to capture the routines, principles, and systems that matter most to me.
Instead of buying a notebook, I decided to build one.
Design Goals
Pocket-sized and easy to carry.
Durable enough for everyday use.
Simple to repair or remake.
Built entirely from materials I already had on hand.
Handmade with visible construction rather than hidden perfection.
Materials
Standard printer paper
Tyvek tape
Staples
Recycled Coca-Cola box for the cover
Mod Podge Matte
Process
The notebook was built using a deliberately improvised approach.
Pages were folded into signatures, stapled together, and reinforced using Tyvek tape before being assembled into the final book. Rather than chasing a perfectly manufactured appearance, I embraced the handmade nature of the build. Slight imperfections became part of its character.
One unexpected discovery was how well the Tyvek tape worked as both a structural material and a visual design element. What began as a practical solution became one of my favorite features of the notebook.
Revisions
The project evolved in two parallel ways: the notebook itself and the information it contains.
Notebook Revisions:
The first version was intentionally built using only materials I already had on hand. Printer paper, Tyvek tape, a recycled Coca-Cola box, and 3 staples were enough to produce a functional prototype.
Rather than aiming for perfection, the objective was to learn the process and create something I would actually use. Each iteration revealed small improvements - from binding techniques and spine construction to cover materials and overall durability—that will influence future versions.
The notebook continues to evolve as I learn more about bookbinding and experiment with new construction methods.
Content Revisions:
The contents of the manual have changed just as much as the notebook itself.
As the manual became part of my daily routine, I found myself simplifying rather than adding. One early example was replacing the goal of “Read 15 Minutes” with the broader reminder to “Read Every Day.” The change shifted the focus from measuring time to building a consistent habit.
Rather than treating the manual as a finished document, I see it as a living system. New ideas are added, existing sections are refined, and anything that doesn’t prove useful is removed. Each revision brings it a little closer to becoming a practical guide for how I want to live and work.
Final Result
The finished notebook is exactly what I hoped it would be: simple, functional, and uniquely mine.
More importantly, it serves as a reminder that useful tools don’t always need to be purchased. Sometimes the best solution is the one you build yourself.
Lessons Learned
Finished is better than perfect.
Working with materials already on hand often leads to more creative solutions.
Physical objects can encourage habits in ways digital tools sometimes can’t.
Handmade construction adds character that mass-produced products often lack.
What’s Next
This first notebook is the beginning, not the end.
Future versions may explore different paper stocks, binding techniques, cover materials, page layouts, and formats as I continue learning the craft of bookbinding.
